Chile’s Christian Democratic Party and the Third way
Zhang Kun, Guo Changgang Journal of Latin American Studies Jun. 2015
In the last of the 20th century, Christian Democratic was a political ideology pursued by the Catholic Church and its members in Latin America. A number of Christian democratic parties were established to participate into elections and integrate Christian values into state policies. Among them, the Christian Democratic Party of Chile was especially remarkable for its political success. It strongly promoted the Third Way based on political compromise and social harmony to overcome ideological conflicts and stabilize political situation. The centrist roule enabled it to rise to be an independent force once accepted by both the left and the right. However, after taking the ruling power, it lost the centrist stance as a result of increasing economic and political pressure, which led to its failure.
